Arabic Diwan Award for Calligraphy Berlin 2019
In 2017, the Arabic Cultural House - The Divan was founded. As Qatar‘s first cultural center, outside the country, it provides a platform for vibrant, cultural exchange between Occident and the Orient. Against this background, the Arabic Divan Calligraphy Award Berlin will be awarded for the first time in 2019. This is used to create the networking of Arabic calligraphers and it offers anyone of any nation the chance to present their Arabic calligraphy work and compete with others.
The Arabic Divan Calligraphy Award Berlin is open to all to present themselves in their calligraphy area and have them evaluated by a six-member expert jury.
The competition is aimed at students and young calligraphers who are at most 35 years old (Attached copy of passport). In case you are younger than 18 years old please get into contact with Professor Rayan Abdullah. Submissions may include: theses or semester theses as well as further developed works in all Arabic known and unknown fonts, with or without ornaments. Each participant can submit one application.
The theme of the 1st Arabic Divan Calligraphy Prize Berlin is the Basmala, written in one Arabic font per sheet.
In the following categories participants can submit their copies:
- Arabic calligraphy
- Arabic calligraphy and ornaments
The assignment to a category must be made upon submission by the participant. Any changes can only be made by the jury. Supplements and declarations for submission should amount to no more than three DIN A4 pages.
- Not smaller than DIN A3, that is 297 x 420 mm.
- The work must be provided with the calligrapher‘s signature.
- All copies must be originals and must not be older than three years.
- The copies must not previously have been enlisted in any other competition.

* min. / max. data size per picture: 500kb / 10mb
The jury will evaluate the products according to the following criteria:
1. Design quality
-solve formal problem areas
-complexity and conciseness of calligraphy
2. Innovative quality
-innovative solutions of the concept based on the Arabic fonts
Only when all the criteria, based on the respective category, are met, an applicant can achieve a good ranking.
The jury members are all experts in the areas mentioned above. Together they decide on the results of the competition.
The rankings will be determined in a non-public selection procedure. For participation in the Arabian Divan calligraphy award Berlin, up to three copies per application can be submitted.
Every participant who fulfills the conditions of participation has the chance to win the main prize. The prices have a total value of 16.000 €.
The first three award winners will be refunded the flight and the hotel in Berlin for five days.
The award-winning exhibits will be presented in an exhibition in Berlin and will be presented as a printed copy as well as on the homepage https://zenith.me/en/calligraphy/arabic-divan-award-for-calligraphy.
The results will be announced online via the Divan website http://www.arabicdivan.de and under https://zenith.me/en/calligraphy/arabic-divan-award-for-calligraphy.
An exhibition book will be published as a documentation of the Arab Divan Calligraphy award Berlin in 2019 in the publishing house of Markenbau.
Cost contribution / Notification / Publication
There are no additional costs for the applicant. All participants will be informed about the results of their application in a written form (by e-mail). The upper seats will also be announced on the Internet. Following the selection of the jury of experts, an exhibition of the 30 best-placed works will take place during the award ceremony on 1 October 2019. All participants are cordially invited to the award ceremony and get their participation ceremoniously certified. Everyone has to pay the travel expenses themselves.
